ALL ABOUT ADAM

My name is, as you've seen, Adam Perry. I'm Musician from the West Midlands of England.

My Reasoning for doing music is as simple as any. I love it. It fascinates me in

the sense that we have been able to almost map out and chart different techniques and phrases

that emphasise or depict emotion, how Just adding harmony to a melody can drastically change

its feel or slightly altering rhythm changes how a person may feel a certain groove.

My Main source of inspiration would be Jazz. With instances of Calming yet sorrowful pieces like

"Almost Blue" by Chet Baker or Big Band energetic pieces like "Rush" written by Yoko Kanno,

even though they are both depicted as 'Jazz' they are both completely different and that is

one of its greatest points, that it does not matter who you are or where you from or what

inspires you, if you can carry a tune and genuinely enjoy it you are 9.9 times out of 10 going

to be accepted and that's what I love about it.

I used to Attend the "Jazzlines" group in the

Birmingham Symphony Hall where they would put us into groups, and we would play the tune that

they had for us that day and they would emphasise this notion of Improvising and we would take

turns listening to each other improvise over this tune and the one time the Main guy there

said to us, "That is great that you can go off and solo but remember to try and reference the

main melody In your improv" and it seems obvious now that that's what you should try and do

but back then that tiny bit of advice changed the way I looked at improvising, it was not just

about scales and mindless notes here and there but rather, Phrasing and telling a story with

your playing, referencing the melody and building off of it which is why I really want to

continue studying music, not only to do it as a Job but also to learn new techniques to expand

my musical palette.

In Terms of Actually performing, I have gotten incredibly used to learning

pieces quickly and, on the spot, due the vaccines in college and extra work that I have been

presented with or have been asked to do as a favour. One of the biggest performances I have

done is for a Festival at Drayton Manor for a company called "Thomas Dudley" as they were

celebrating their 100th year of service. It was a 20 song setlist in which we had to stick to

a celebration theme and play Infront of 400+ people and we had about 2 months of prep time. I

Have also done multiple performances inside and out of college, some being jazz gigs where we

played pieces such as "Take the A train" and "Lullaby of Birdland" and others have been rock

gigs where we performed songs such as "Black Hole Sun" I am confident in my ability to hold a

tune on bass and to be able to support the others in the band, I love the connection between a

drummer and bassist that are locked in and whenever I perform, I strive to achieve this

connection so that I can give the rhythm section that boost in flavour and tone, this is

especially prevalent in Funk and soul where there is this notion of leaving out harmonic

complexity, focusing on that groove, and getting people dancing, as a bassist that's what I

love most.

I also love Writing Music, I primarily use Sibelius as my writing software because

not only do I like to write Funk and Jazz pieces, but I also love writing for more traditional

classical styles whether that be Baroque chamber music, String quartet or even a Whole

orchestra. I absolutely love exploring distinctive styles/genres of music and studying upon

their cool nuisances and writing techniques and then just having a go at writing for that

style.
